What is "Smalltalk"?

Smalltalk is a pure object-oriented development system known for its simple syntax, consistent programming model (everything is an object), and powerful integrated development environment (IDE).  These features make application development in Smalltalk a productive and even enjoyable experience, allowing you to focus on domain issues rather than on language idiosyncrasies and compile/link/test mechanics.  The more languages you've worked with, the more you're going to appreciate the simplicity, elegance and power of Smalltalk.  Also, if you're new to programming, Smalltalk is a great place to start.

What types of applications can be developed in Smalltalk?

Smalltalk has been used in a wide variety of domains ranging from mission-critical, line-of-business systems to 3D simulations and games.  See the "Who's Who" list below for some examples of how Smalltalk is used.

Where do I start?

The best way to learn Smalltalk is to use it (rather than just read about it).  Before going any further, however, you may wish to click here to review a slightly tongue-in-cheek warning about Smalltalk, brought to you by the folks at Object Arts, the maker of Dolphin Smalltalk.

A 30 day trial version of Dolphin Smalltalk is available free of charge from Object-Arts.  Click here for trial program specifics and instructions on how to register

If you just want to get a taste of what Smalltalk looks like, you can review the Dolphin Smalltalk beginner's guide by clicking here.   It's best, however, to have a working copy of Smalltalk available while going through the guide.

Dolphin Smalltalk technical support is available at USENET newsgroup comp.lang.smalltalk.dolphin. Beginner's questions are welcome.  Questions can also be asked at comp.lang.smalltalk, a vendor neutral Smalltalk newsgroup.
