Shootout

Objective

Shootout involves two teams (player1 and player2) taking penalty shots on each other.   The shooting team and defending team (the team with the keeper in goal) alternate positions until each team has taken five shots.  The team with the most goals after five attempts wins.  The game may end prior to five shots being taken if it is not possible for a team to at least tie the game with its remaining shots (For example, team #1 is declared the victor if it is ahead 3 - 0 after three shots have been taken by both teams).

Playing Keeper

  • Dive Right -  X or the Right Arrow key.

  • Press and release a key (Z, X, or arrows) quickly to fake left or right.

Taking a shot

The Virtual Boot

  • The orientation of the virtual boot, shown above, determines the point at which the ball is struck and the resultant trajectory of the ball.  Like a real ball, strike it low to get a high trajectory. Strike it low to cause the shot to hug the ground.  Strike it on its left side to cause it to go right.  Strike it on its right side to shoot left.

  • The screen shot shows the foot positioned to take a shot towards the left side of the goal.

  • Move the mouse left to swing the boot around the ball towards the left.  Right to go right.  Up to move it up.

  • Click left mouse button to begin shot.

  • The shot direction can be changed anytime up to the point that the ball is struck.

Two Player Mode

It's recommended that in two player mode, one player sit on the left side of the keyboard and the other on the right.  Since the players will be alternating taking shots using the mouse, it's best to have mouse positioned between the two players, in front of the keyboard, rather than on the left or right-hand side of the keyboard.

The player on the left should use the Z and X keys to control the keeper.  The player on the right should use the left and right arrow keys.

Shootout Settings

Offensive Viewpoint - Determines camera position (viewpoint) when taking a shot.  Front of goal causes the viewpoint to be stationary behind the shooter, facing the goal.  Follow shooter causes the camera to track behind the shooter as the shooter approaches the ball.

Defensive Viewpoint - Determines camera position when playing keeper.  Front of goal places the camera behind the shooter in front of the goal.   Net Cam positions the camera inside the goal at the back of the net with a wide angle lens (causing a "fish eye" effect).  Follow keeper places the camera over the shoulder of the keeper and moves with the keeper.

Foot Preference - Determines the foot that the shooter kicks with.

Scoreboard

(Refer to the screenshot at the top of this page)

The game's scoreboard shows the current status of the game.  The results of shots taken by each team are indicated with a "1" or a red "X" in the row next to the team name and beneath the shot number.  A "1" indicates that the team scored a goal and an "X" indicates that the shot was missed.  The total goals scored by each team is shown in the far right column.  The name of the team currently shooting is shown in green with an asterisk next to it.
